Charles Underwood joined the firm as a trainee in 1975, and after qualification became a partner in 1982.
A member of the Corporate Services Department, Charles is head of Employment Law, leading a team of 3 qualified lawyers. In addition, he has a special interest in commercial licensing, involving applications for licences for clubs, pubs, shops and betting offices. In the employment field, he advises a wide range of clients, from individuals to limited companies, and has a special interest in disability discrimination. The Employment department offers a personal service which combines sharp legal knowledge with sound business sense. All its lawyers are members of the Employment Lawyers Association. In the past, Charles has been involved in advising companies on handling large scale redundancies, establishing contracts and codes of practice, as well as having a number of notable successes in the Employment Tribunal. He has lectured to organisations and been involved in seminars on a variety of topics.
In commercial licensing, he acts for a local brewery, as well as a number of smaller operations, including sole traders. In addition to applications for liquor licences, he has advised on entertainment licences, extended hours’ certificates, appeals to the Crown Court on behalf of the local Magistrates’ Court, and (as a rare perk of the job) applications for a sex shop licence and a lap-dancing club.He is married, with 2 teenage children. Away from the office, he plays squash and tennis (slowly), and watches the family spend money (quickly). |
